Start Radio Duties
Start Radio will need to tell Control:-
That the start crews are ready (usually mentioned during the radio check)
When each Official Car goes in
The time in of the zero car - remember the zero car is
not
to be included in your total of cars in.
The time
and number
of the first car in with a warning that the stage is live
If there is a stoppage, the numbers of the last 3 cars in, time of the last car
in and total of cars in before the stoppage
The number and time of the first car after the stoppage with length of stoppage
The numbers of the last 3 cars in, time of the last and total of cars in
Let's use Pam's callsign for examples. Control's (imaginary!) response is in
blue
Control Stoke 3
Stoke 3 - Go ahead
First car into Stage 2
car number 3
taking the time of one-zero decimal three-zero decimal zero-zero.
Over
From that transmission we know:
car 3 was the first car into stage 2
it went in at 10:30 exactly.
The double zero at the end is not really needed though some people do include
it.
If it is not possible to get your transmission in as soon as the
stage goes live with the first car simply call "Safety" between transmissions
and Control will clear and ask you to go ahead. Then you can say "Stage 2 live
with car number 3. Over" and when Control is ready he/she will come back to you
and ask for your start details.
If the network is really busy forget the calling in, time your announcement
between transmissions and get in there with "Control, Stoke 3, stage live with
car 3". Control will understand why you broke in
and then everyone knows it has happened!
Be aware that it is vital that everyone knows the first car is into stage as
soon as the car goes in, time can wait, warning of stage live cannot.
Also be aware if the number of the first car into stage is not transmitted no
one will know which car to look out for. Thus the first car could go off and
not be missed until the second car arrives at finish. Provided the previous car
number system is being used, that is, if it isn't, the first car could be
totally lost.
Another example:-
Control Stoke 3
Stoke 3 - Go ahead
I have closing details when you are ready. Over.
Stoke 3 - Wait one
Stoke 3, Control
Go ahead, Control
Stoke 3 - Go ahead with your closing details. Over
Last three cars into Stage 3, car numbers seven-nine, eight-zero and eight-one.
Eight-one taking the time of one-one decimal five-nine decimal three-zero.
Total cars into stage seven-six.
Over.
From that transmission we know that:
the last three cars were 79, 80, 81
the last one (81) went in at 11:59 and 30 seconds
the total of cars that went into stage 3 was 76.
Notice we have not used "seventy-six", simply "seven-six". This makes for
easier recognition over the air.
Remember, someone in Control will be writing all this information
down so try to speak slowly enough for them to cope with writing the figures
correctly, it will use less airtime than having to transmit them twice because
the writer could not keep up!
Before the radio check you will need to check on, and if necessary help
towards, the readiness of the start timing crew.
During the radio check tell Control if the start crew is ready to run, if they
are not ready give an estimate of the ready time.
