Instage Radio Duties

There is no getting away from it, your checksheet is the vital part of your day. You need to record every car that passes your position including the order of the cars.
If a car demolishes your stage furniture you need to go put the arrows/tape/post back. This is where it is very difficult if there is only one of you, you have to keep the checksheet at the same time.
And, of course, you cannot bang in a stake unless you have a hammer. Did I mention packing one of those?
Whatever happens, if a car goes off by you send a runner to find out:
  •   Is the track blocked?
  •   Are the crew OK?

    The answers must be reported to Control ASAP

  • Always try to keep from showing panic over the air. Compose your message on paper if necessary before you speak, that way you will remember everything and be an asset to Control.
    If you feel the only safe way of dealing with a situation is a stage stoppage, ask for one. You probably won't get one but it will make everyone aware that you can only deal by leaving your radio - normally forbidden but if lives are at stake.........
    ......remember to tell Control when you have to leave your radio.
     
    You are responsible for keeping the junction you are on in the state the Stage Commander left it before the first car. That means controlling spectators as well, they love walking off with arrows! Unfortunately some of them forget the competitors need to be able to see the arrows. BUT be patient and polite where spectators are concerned, sponsors need them! Try to point out the error of their ways without upsetting them when they want to stand on the apex of a bend or some other dangerous place.
    All in all being instage radio takes a lot of off-the-cuff reaction, you have to do what you think is best no matter what situation you find yourself in, but don't forget, Control is on the other end of that mike - listen for the announcement "Control clear" and the air is free for you to call Control who will give all the help you need.
     
    The Stage goes ready with the first course car and live with the first competitor.
  •   Report to Control any vehicles going WD (wrong direction) once the stage is ready.
  •   Report to Control any vehicles other than event organising vehicles that may appear on the stage after it is at ready.
  •    Report to Control anything that is moving on stage once it has gone live - except for competitors on stage, that is!
  • The phrase "for your information" is useful preceeding the transmission of such info.
     
    Of course, if you have been listening to every transmission you will know whether Control has already been told something or not!
